So this is it. I installed a blogging software and this is the first post. I have been thinking of starting a blog for some time now, but I never got going. Actually, I already had installed the software a few months ago, but never finished the configuration, let alone started a first blog post. What gave me the necessary kick in the butt now is John Sonmez’ book “Soft Skills”. If you don’t own a copy yet, you should get one now, also make sure to drop by his site, simpleprogrammer.com.
So what should I write about? In my career I have worked mostly with C++. When I meet programmers who don’t use C++ and tell them what I do, I often get remarks like “Uh, C++. That’s too complicated.” or “You must be pretty smart and/or masochistic to put up with that language.” I also have seen programmers who, when writing C++ code, immediately switch to “think complicated” mode and produce a mind-bending mess they would never tolerate if it was written in – for example – Java or C#. I disagree with that mindset, although I sometimes can see how it came to be. In this blog, I want to share my experiences, thoughts and examples about how programming in C++ can be made as simple as in any other language. Click here for a more in-depth discussion on what I want to write about and why.
I am thrilled to get this one started at last!
